Are you someone who has set goals for themselves recently? Or made some News Year resolutions that you are now finding it hard to keep? You are not alone. I’m sure most of us set out with a new path or a new goal.
“I’m going to work on splits”
“I’m going to get abs”
“I’m going to lose ‘x-amount’ of weight”
“I’m going to do that crazy pole move I have seen all the athlete polers doing on Instagram”
Have a think for a moment about which goal you currently have going on in your life? Or perhaps one you would like to have… now really think about it?
Now don’t get me wrong I am all for pushing to be better, but just take a moment to work out why you want those things…
Is it because all your peers you follow on social media have abs, over splits and crazy pole moves? What we see everyday on social media goes in deep, think of it like advertising, when you see the same pizza advert over and over again, eventually the advertising will probably work, and you’ll go and get it!
Now think about social media, this constant stream of people adverts, going into your mind… Bare in mind they only put out the good bits of their lives. Not the bit of them up late and crying into a tub of ice cream for whatever reason.
Whilst a lot of social media is great for motivation and ideas, it can also be damaging and demotivating all at the same time.
Remember something, when you see all the crazy moves, don’t forget the hard work, the blood sweat and tears these dancers have put in to get that 30 second clip, of a polished move they have been working on, tried 50 times that day and finally got it right.
Back to your goals… So I’m sure you want what ever is at the end of your line, but why?… Example: “My poling will be awesome if I could do splits and I could do so many awesome moves”… Tell me something… are you not already awesome?
My beginner polers always makes me think of how we change, as we enter the pole world. Think about your first lesson, even if it’s not pole, perhaps you have another passion.. How excited were you when you started? You looked forward to every week, for what you were going to do next. Now fast forward and introduce social media, now what do you think of your poling/passion? How has this changed the way you look at yourself?
Imagine for a moment that you are actually happy with your body… Happy learning new pole things that suit your body and your ability… This is a freeing feeling to have.
Every one is so different, so why not pursue your strengths, rather than always having your focus on a weakness.
What I am trying to get at here, is that the social pressures we build up in our own heads, can make a big difference to how we see ourselves. People don’t say to you, “You should lose weight?” “You need to be more flexible” (If there are people walking round saying shit like this, then they are not nice people!!)
No one cares what you look like! No one cares if you can do the latest Fonji-Flip-Iron X-Toe Spin!!
They care about you! How you are doing? Are you healthy and happy? – This is what people think.
So why not give yourself a break, eat some cake, and think about what you are good at, and what you enjoy, then base some targets around yourself.
Bottom line is, life is too short. No one knows how long anyone has left, so why not make the most of it, enjoy your unique journey and be happy in your own body. After all, you are awesome already!
